There's a YouTube with an A/B test between Bartolinis and Nordstrand Big Singles. You can hear a big difference. The Barts are warm to muffled; the Nords are brighter. The footage shows two active basses of the same model and the same EQ settings.
Another YouTube is by Ibanez. The A/B in that is between SR505N with Nord Big Breaks and SR500A with Bart BH2. The only other difference is 500A has a see-through paint job, whilst the 505N has an opaque finish. The tones from the two are much the same.
Why would the demos be so different in tones? It's not going to be the paint, and the woods are the same. Might the two 500 models have a different value volume pot?
