Another "which PA" thread

Hey gang. My band has been gigging for a while but our BL (and PA owner) recently called it quits so as we've been trying out new singers, we've also been trying to put together a new PA to gig with. Our guitar player bought one of the new wireless snake/mixers, we all have our own powered wedges so what we need is basically the dual sub/top box set ups. We've been eyeing the Carvin TRX line array systems and we've also been looking at the QSC K series. We're a modern/southern rock cover band with a few vox, 2 guitars, bass and fully mic'd drums running through the PA. We are looking for something that covers around 250 people max. Budget is about $5000. Thank you my low end amigos!!

We've rented the QSC bottoms a couple of times....I think it was the KW series. How does the K series stack up??

K 12's are great.. but I prefer 15's for tops.
But, 12's get real loud and clear.

Not used their subs.

K12's on KW-181's - are killer... ProAudioStar.com has great prices on them. 6 yr warranty when you register the purchase with QSC.

Hard to beat the JBL SRX800 series.

Look at some of the comments on prosoundweb. Seems to be a clear preference for the JBL's in head to head comparisons.

Can't go wrong with the QSC K's, the new SRX's from JBL or the DSR's from Yamaha. That budget will allow you to pick from any of them.

JBL PRX 712s & one 718XLF has covered ALL our gigs, outdoors. RMCaudioDirect would probably have all of that for $2500. JBL SRX series are nice on paper, havent' heard em but I cant see spending the xtra coin when the PRX series completely covers it. The Yamaha DSR series is also a TOTAL beast with the bigger HF driver (3" voice coil) Same as the SRX series for the price of the PRXs. Worth a look. Ive heard the QSC k12s. Good stuff but I liked the wood of PRX better.

How big of outdoor gigs? Unless it is a small low volume affair one sub isn't enough outdoors. We always use at least 2 and sometimes up to 6 QSC HPRs outside.

One of Those town sponsored weekly gigs on the green. 2would have been nice but for 2 outdoor gigs a year perfectly fine. Inside one 718 sub is definitely enough

I'm surprised people need more subs for outdoor. We don't have subs, but I find that I run the bass amp at lower volumes outdoors than indoors. I suspect it is because the bass carries well and the guitar volume drops.

We usually have a house behind us, we are not out in the middle of a field.

Well your bass is being reinforced by the house acting as a boundary. Go out in the middle of a field and I bet you will have different results.

See. Thats the point, how many gigs a year are played outside in a field with no boundries? Its kinda crazy to buy a 2nd sub for these rare gigs vs apply that cash to a better set of tops, mixer, monitors etc you use on EVERY gig. Hey for that one outdoor field gig my kick drum may not be too loud... the crowd really wont care that much. If you have the coin & you're a pro band doing festivals often. Sure, go for it. Your average cover band doesn't NEED a 2nd sub with these new subs being so good.

Maybe in your world. My band doesn't play some neighborhood backyard party. Most of our outdoor gigs have several hundred people in attendance. The last outdoor gig was a wedding out in the middle of nowhere on a flatbed trailer. We use a minimum of 2 subs every gig.

In your case, absolutely grab 2 subs. You're in an above average band for sure bro, congrats.

I believe you. I have never been at a wedding that wasn't near a building. Too much chance of rain. And I have also never been at a wedding of several hundred people I thought 150 was a big wedding!

Well the wedding I was talking about probably had 150 guests. The big outside gigs are street dances or rodeo after parties. We have did a few with between 700 to a 1000 people. We then use 6-8 subs.
