Anthony Jackson Questions

I haven't heard much of Anthony Jackson, but on Al DiMeola's album Elegant Gypsy the song Race with Devil on Spanish Highway has the fastest bass line I have ever heard.

rather than start another aj appreciation thread i thought id bring this ancient one back to life
anyway, ive had crossings on cd for a while but i never picked up the 80's eyewitness albums. so, i decide to go scour my local vinyl shops today and was pleasantly suprised. while i didnt find all three, i did find a new,sealed copy of blades. after listening to it a couple of times already, all i can say is aj is absolutely nasty on this album. now i just need to find eyewitness and casa loco.

I've tried to order the "Protocol" albums from a couple different places without success. Where did you get them?
Lucky for me, I caught AJ live years ago in Boston playing with Michel Camilo. I saw him play four sets over two nights. He really tore it up.
If I remember correctly it was his B-day and he really took alot of solos.
I spoke to him for a bit and he told me, "remember it is a bass guitar, not an
acoustic bass!!"

The Doobie Brothers Long Train Runnin' (1970-2000)
Hmmmmm.......This is rather disturbing for me because Tiran Porter is one of my heroes. I saw the Doobs live in 1978 and can assure you that Porter is far more than just a capable bassist. You can't convince me that he wasn't good enough to play the studio stuff after what I heard him do at that show all those years ago. I never have heard this before and it seems suspect to me. This is either erroneous or needs more investigation. We need some more facts here.

I have to agree that this tune, to my ears, sounds very consistant to Porter's other Doobies work in style & tone. I'd like to see where the credit is listed for Anthony playing this tune.

Long Train Runnin' 1970-2000 is a multi-disc compilation set. I just verified that @AMG & AJ is listed as one of the bassists...I swear I saw George Hawkins' name in there, too(Hawkins played in Loggin's Keep The Fire-era band for awhile. He's also bad).
I agree with lneal about Porter...IMO, he's very happenin' & tasteful. I still recall a Don Kirschner's In Concert show from the '70s & Porter just ripped. In fact, he played better live vs. what he played in the studio.
Back to Jackson & Blades; finally burned that record onto a cd for the car. Very, very cool.

I think we have some confusion. He is just one of the bassists (other than Porter) listed in the credit of the Doobie's compilation "Long Train Runnin'", not the actual song? Is this correct?
That would make more sense since Porter left the band for a number of years.
Anthony Jackson also played on Chaka Khan's "Through The Fire" and The O'Jay's "For The Love Of Money" which should be familiar tunes for most folks!
Back in the day, I was a huge Doobies' fan. That said-
It's my belief that Porter played on everything from Toulouse Street(their 2nd album) up to One Step Closer(Willie Weeks took over here).
After a LIVE double album w/ Weeks, the Doobies went on a long period of inactivity. I think when they did re-unite, it was Porter who did the first couple albums(Cycles & Brotherhood). FWIW, I haven't bought anything since Brotherhood.
It seems they do credit Nathan East on the LP along with 2 other bassists but besides the minimal slap accents, it sounds like AJ to me. He has this serious 'palm muting' technique that few folks were using much back then.
I concur, Jim. The first album was self titled with the original bassist, Dave Shogren. Long since out of print, it was an interesting contrast to their later work. Fan that I am, I have it on vinyl.
On topic, a guitar player friend of mine claims to have played with AJ for a while. I can't, however prove this. Damn guitar players!
I have that CK album on LP & I'm pretty sure the credits for each song are listed. I'll check it ouit when I get back home.
BTW, the best version I've heard of "This Is My Night"(the 1st tune on that particular Chaka record)...Oteil just ripping away in a Va. Beach bar band.

I totally dig AJ's stuff on the Chaka Khan records from the late 70's-early eighties. Then again, all those academic things he's rattling on about in Bass Player Mag are a complete turn-off. Especially his own columns were nasty. The most insulting thing was that bass playing should be left to professionals, not just simple amateurs with day jobs. I don't remember his exact words, but it made me very angry.
Whenever I listen to the Chaka tunes (and Ritenour's, and on and on...) I can't help thinking: what a great player. Whenever I read his interviews, I can't help thinking: what a prick!
