Any hints for playing in a gymnasium?

OK So we did the gig. It was a party for mostly our friends, probably about 100 people or so. School gymnasium.
It was boomy. Acoustics were quite poor, with a wide variance in sound depending on where you stood in the room.
Despite such we kept the crowd dancing, invited groups of people up to sing with us on choruses, and a good time was had by all. Our driving dance version of "The Locomotion" went really well.
Lousy sound, yet it was probably our best gig ever as far as us and the audience having a good time. I guess it's not only about tone...

Hey, I used to work with Little Eva a lot. Nice gal...had a great voice and a lot of range. Good call with "The Locomotion." You're right...it's not about tone as much as you might think it is. Tone's important, but enthusiasm is the most important thing.

They are great for situations where a drummer needs to play at a volume level lower than you'd get with regular sticks.
Played a fundraiser in a gym last weekend. I did a search prior and found this thread to be very helpful.
I had bass/vocal/light/sound/roadie duties. On the first soundcheck the people listening out front said it sounded good. It was monitors only, no FOH, haha. We tried to keep volume low.
The group has 6 vocalist and when they started asking to be turned up because they couldn't hear themselves I suggested we sing a cappela and see if they could hear themselves. Then we added each instrument and turned down the instrument levels so that the vocals could still be heard.
The drums were the big culprit in this instance. Turned downed the volume on them and everyone was happy. Nice feature of V drums.
A good time was had by all.
