Any Love For The T-Max?

Probably Peavey's best. Mine's been just sitting in the attic since I retired it in order to scale back due to the old age/bad back thing:hmm:, I have tried a laundry list of small combos since, and nothing including the Peaveys sound quite like the ol' T. With all the great hi-tech stuff out there it's amazing that nothing sounds like them, at least to my ears. Anyone else love 'em????

Hi Mike! I'm still diggin' your Stealth bass! Hope the L1k is okay too! Anyway, being a stubborn old mule, I want to stay in the combo/ 1-piece arena if possible. Even if I need to sell the T-Max to finance something. So far, I have a Hartke 1415 combo that sounds nice but is a bit underpowered. Also have an Ashdown MAG300C15 that's okay, but not a T! Tried and failed with the Peavey BAM, SWR Workingman 15, and some others.

I had no idea you were a TBer! Weird. The 3 of the last 4 transactions I've had via the internet all ended up being guys from talkbass (the aforementioned L-1000, the sale of my Basic 2 Way cabinet to NJ and the purchase of my Aguilar cabinets from a guy in Baton Rouge). For anyone else reading this: Fran is GREAT to deal with.

Moving along: I've heard a lot of good things about the BAM. I'm surprised it failed (although I guess the weight could have done it in). My other amp is an SWR Basic Black. It's light weight and decently powered (depends on your situation), but it doesn't sound like the T-Max. I wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for the G&L. It hasn't moved up to #1 slot yet, but I'm still fiddling with different strings and what not. I hope the Fender does what you need.

Small world indeed, Mike! Glad the L1k isn't firewood yet. I really do like the P too. And thanks for the props! I'm here all the time, well since '04, just quiet. Much as I dug my T-Max, I'm thinking it's time to let her go to a loving home to finance something else. Something will catch my ear and eye at some point! What a riot about that TJMAxx lawsuit! Never heard that before...:D

I've got a T-Max on the way - any tube recommendations for it??? I'm currently using a pair of Mark VI's, and have a 210TXV, 410TXV, 215D-BW, and an 1810... I tried out "my" T-Max when it came it, through a 410TXV in the store, and a random Jazz bass off the wall, and to my ears the SS pre sounded better than the tube pre(which was a bit noisy - I'm guessing the tube is beat)... Now, I've just gotta play a couple of gigs in the next 2 weeks to pay it off...

I guess you could say I'm a Peavey fan...

I use a military-spec long-black-plate Sylvania 5751 in my Max preamp. The 5751 has less gain, and is smoother than an AX7. This works in conjunction with a mod I did on the input using Peavey schematics, that gets more gain out of the tube. Net result is that it'll do glassy clean sheen or a creamier overdrive that will also get somewhat gritty depending on EQ.

I blend the tube and SS sides quite a bit, and use the tube side with a lot of pregain.

The Max preamp clobbers the Alembic F-1X I used to have.

Could you elaborate a bit more on the input mod you did, or point me in the right way??? I have a background in electricity, and a bit of one in electronics - and am not afraid to make modifications... A PM would be fine, if you'd rather...
