I sing mostly when I'm doing solo stuff. In some bands I sang lead, but it just depends on the band. These days I just prefer to play bass with different groups and sing about half the time.

Singing lead definitely helps to avoid "lead singer" drama

It can be tricky, but I'm given the material that calls for the growl. "The Real Me", "Killing In The Name Of", Lightning Crashes", that sort of thing....

Yup. Was a singer, guitar player and sax player for almost 30 years before picking up the bass. The permanent bass player that was to be scouted for never materialized, and 5 years later I'm a GASoholic.

Strangely enough, on some songs I can't play bass very well unless I sing. It's like I get to much free time for thinking. And when did ever thinking do music any good?

WOW! This is GREAT! I started off learning basslines first, and then fitting vocals in. I still do that, but now I find that I can learn, and synchronize the two things almost at the same time. I am no great singer, but I can stay on key, and throw some emotions into the mix ( Maybe we should form one of these talkbass clubs ? )

Rune Bivrin, I totally understand what you say about playing bass better when you have to sing along with the bassline. I have experienced this, too. So, there are bassists out there who experience the same things.

I always liked to sing, and learned the guitar as a kid to accompany myself. Later switched to bass and have sung lead and backups in bands for many years.
