Any tips on finding a band to join?

I say go audition for some rock or punk band anyway. At worst the audition will be a valuable experience and you can decide afterwards that it's "not for you". But maybe you'll like it enough to stick with it and they'll like you.

Open mics are also a good place to meet people. Usually they're full of guitarists and female singers, many of whom need a bassist.
If you don't love the music then why do it?
Because you like music so much that you enjoy playing music you wouldn't want to listen to. A lot of us are that way. I mean, I've got my limits, but I'm very happy playing things I have zero interest in ever listening to, including children's music. My cajon player claims to have never heard a single one of my pop band's songs (we play very popular stuff - Gaga, Britney, Shakira, Beyonce) and basically hates popular music, but likes playing it enough that he's even willing to do unpaid gigs.
