Double Bass Anyone changing up their setup for this year?

IMG_2692.jpeg

I’m experimenting with a mix of hi & lo tech.

The Empress para EQ with hpf & lpf (plus boost) along with the Little (amp) Wedgie!

The photo makes the wedgie look bigger - it’s roughly the same size as the pedal.

I’ve been using Full Circle > sarno BB > Fishman Platinum pro for a couple of years as my front end.
Very convenient and compact, tune, eq, comp, notch, phase, HPF. I always struggled cutting through in the mix, everything sounded ‘scooped’.

after repositioning the sound post my old Kay certainly improved acoustically particular in the mid voicing and I felt this setup wasn’t reflecting that.

So I got a Vic’s pickup w/clicky and a EDB2-VAP to blend channels and it’s a phenomenal upgrade. I ran the FC and Vic’s wing and on my rig the Vic’s has a fuller signal and tone - the FC sounds sterile and weak.

what I like about blending the fretboard p/u is that it lends a more acoustic tone if set properly, you can hear the contact and percussion which a bridge mounted pu misses.
Now with a great signal from Vic’s and the channel blending and eq features on the Headway VAP the difference is incredible. Every time I plug in I continue to be amazed, it’s just so damn fun to play when you sound good.

As part of my rig simplification quest I realize I have a fair amount of gear of various types that I'm quite sure I'll never use again. On the other hand, what I'm using now and am quite happy with is mostly older, like many years, and hadn't been used for a while before I tried it again and liked it. When and how do you decide when to get rid of by whatever means gear that is just taking up space(you think)?

If a part of my rig is working well for me and it is either getting regular use or it has a special application, I will keep it. Otherwise, I try to keep the collection to a minimum.

I have a somewhat modular setup for louder gigs/venues, but I am reaching for the more portable, simpler solutions lately.

I haven't been planning to make any changes, but Sunday I was playing a gig and my Markbass combo started cutting out - it plays fine for a couple of minutes when turning on and then goes silent. I'm taking it to the service center (Inner Sound in Clackamas, OR) tomorrow. Hopefully it'll get fixed but now I'm wondering if I should be thinking about a new amp.

The Genzler/Gollihur Bass Acoustic Array looks really close to what I want, but for a few nits:
- I don't need the effects (reverb and chorus).
- I'd really like mute buttons on both channels.
- I'd prefer speakon connectors to 1/4" for hooking up external speakers.
- If it only had a foot switch to switch between channels that would be great (thinking either different settings for a single instrument (like pizz/arco) or switching between slab and upright).

We'll see what the repair folks say. Hopefully I'll be able to just keep using the gear I have!

I'm sticking with the same simple rig:

Full Circle > Markacoustic AC 101, sometimes augmented by Nadine mic > FOH in concert settings.

I also have this option for when one trip from the car is important:

Full Circle > Fishman Platinum Stage Preamp > Markbass Micromark 801

I only use the preamp with the Micromark as I find it's the difference between it being a nice practice amp and something I can use on gigs. Sometimes I think about upgrading the preamp since there are so many new options out there, but the Fishman works fine for my needs. However, if @Kai Sanchez tells me that he still loves his new Yamahiko pickup after a few gigs, I may have a decision to make :greedy:

I am switching it up in 2024. Sold my Ampeg B15r last August before a big cross county move. Started to miss it by January. Looking for something similar but lighter and more versatile.

After watching over 100 Arkham YouTube videos I bought a Arkham Oracle from a fellow TBer. It is exactly what I wanted. Currently playing the Oracle through my “back up” GK MB200 and GK Neo112ii. Now thinking of getting a 2 output power amp to power GK Neo and an additional 15. Dreaming of a stained birch bag end s15d. Then I could use the power amp to power PA Speakers if I start playing with a band that goes direct to mixer..

For reference I do not need any of this stuff and currently play alone in my bass-ment.

For upright bass?
