Anyone flip or swing their basses in shows?

okay I am trying to do it like the Drive Like Red guy described, but its just not working. I have aquired several bruises and a pretty nasty burn on my neck from the strap. I can do it the opposite way, but it burns my neck more. I really like the way the backwards looks though.

It seems like the bass is getting caught up on either my back (if my bass is higher) or the strap gets caught in my armpit (if its lower). I cant seem to find any middle ground and its pretty agravating. But everyone else on youtube that has a video of them doing says its super easy and that was thier third try or something like that. So maybe I just suck.

I also used to do this all the time. I used American Fender Jazz basses 90% of the time and American Precision's the other 10% of the time. I was always fine. I used DiMarzio strap locks, and a wireless pack. Not something people do anymore...I'd stick to just playing well ;)

Never at a show, never had room. But I first tried with a Steinbeger. Easy enough, no issues. Then during practice I tried it with my Schecter. Garage practice, so I stepped onto the driveway. Suddenly, this immense force of a bass swinging around was relieved. I turn to see my bass plummet head first into the grass. It came out unscathed and a little dirty, but I'm still afraid to try it again. Protip: get a strap that slides easily. I had a Dickie's strap with stars on it. By the way, if you're wondering what happened, the clip that shortens or lengthens the strap broke in half. Straplocks, strap pins, everything held sturdy but that piece of plastic.

I had that happen at a show one time in a super high energy band I was playing with. The setlist all flowed together for the most part and it happened in the second song! So I held my bass out like an upright and played a metal beakdown like that. Ha. Nobody noticed it broke till I told the vocalist to talk for a few seconds while I switched.

A few years back I bought a $25 no name on Craigslist just to try it. I put on straplocks, wood-glued the strap pins and gave it a whirl. A thin nylon strap makes it easy...anything else not so much at least for me.

Never had any dreams of doing it live, just for fun. Need LOTS of room.
