Anyone here play chess?

I just started getting back into it. Before I go online, though, I thought I'd practice against my computer. So far, it's winning but my ego won't let me lower the difficulty level. Heh. I just need to put the time in and be serious about it. How long have you guys been playing? I would have liked to play all these years (I'm 30 now and learned to play when I was about 5), but nobody I know likes to play chess.

I play chess, but mainly Shogi (Japanese version of chess). Worth playing too, I find it more enjoyable than the western version of chess. But that's me.

I see dude. But if you will try to look at chess strategy, endgames and positional play, you will enjoy more your thought process in chess. Chess is great and deep, that is why thousand and thousand books have been written about it.

One of the misconception in chess is that you need to have a super high IQ to play good. Which is not correct. If a person will study the many concepts about chess like tactics and positional play, that person will not only play better, but he/she will enjoy and appreciate more playing chess.

Chess.com is a good place to check out. I got really into it a while back and took out a year membership (lets you enter multiple tournaments) but had to quit cold turkey as it was too addictive!

I have not tried chess.com, but yeah it's a cool place, and lots of good chess lessons there.
Chesscube and FICS are also cool website to play online chess.

I see what you mean. Thats probably the reason why there are variations. I enjoy chess, no matter what variation. Honestly, I could play for hours on one game. That's why I like Shogi more. You have more endgame possibilities, moves, and strategies.

I am not familiar with Shogi, from what I read from players, it is a cool game, but I google about it and I find that many consider chess as a deeper game.

Dude, in grandmaster chess long game, it is common to see a match finishing after 7 hours. Chess is deep, in fact until now the game Capablanca vs Tartakower is still been analyze to find the absolute correct variations, and that game happened in 1924.

I respect your opinion, but the opinion based on what I read on shogi, chess is deeper. Thousand page can be written alone on chess rook endings or pawn endings. Try to read a book of Dvoretsky, and you will find out that chess is such a complex game.

Dude do you know these concepts about chess? Weak Square, Zugwang, Lucena Position, Opposition rules, prophylaxis, central tension, alekhine gun, benko gambit, Philidor position, hanging pawns, isolated pawn, dark square weakness, minority attack, triangulation ,exchange sacrifice, hypermodern ?

There are more concept about chess, but I will not mention it.

You remind me of my friend in Brazil. He was amazing at chess had all the books and everything. Pretty awesome guy. I can say I don't know about those concepts maybe I'll go and pick up a book on them. We'll have to play some chess together sometime eh?
Hahaha Cheers Dude!

Try registering at chesscube or fics, you can add me at chess cube, just post your user name so I can add you.

Trust me, chess is awesome. If you will read a book, try Winning Chess Strategy by GM Seirawan. It's a popular and entertaining chess book, some chess books are not well written, and some are to advance for those who have not yet read a chess book. :D

For a tactic chess book try Winning Chess Tactics also by Seirawan. Chess tactics and strategy are different concept in chess.
