Anyone know about the Squier Vintage Modified Mustang?

I am in need of a decent short scale in the $300 range and have been considering the Gretsche Junior II, a reaquisition of the Epiphone Viola (loved my first one, don't know why I let it get away) but am suddenly attracted to the Squier Vintage Modified Mustang. Like everyone else my age, I had a Mustang back in the day and liked it. To me, the MIJ reissue seems a little pricey, and I don't care for the newer Modern Player version. Now, I had an Ibanez ARTB100, but had all sorts of fret-buzz problems and let it go. Any thoughts on the Squier Mustang vs. my first two choice?

The MIJ is the best of the lot and if you look for a used one you might find one for 350-400. I have to say I like the Squire Mustang a lot. Squire has really upped it's quality and for the price the are great. I bought a VM Precision to keep at work, great bass no matter how little it cost. I love the black and maple Mustang Squire offers.

As it turns out, I have owned a Gretsch Jr. Jet, a Squier Mustang, and a Squier Jaguar SS in the last 2-3 years. Loved the sound of the Gretsch but it had 3 issues I didn't care for. The body is plywood and HEAVY. The finish chipped easily. There's no contouring whatsoever so it really aggravated my forearm. Also, this particular bass had a very irregular neck with severe differences in fret height. Kind of a worst-case Chinese product. I traded it rather than fix the neck.

The Squier Mustang was fine but IMO it didn't play any better or have the tonal diversity of the Squier Jag SS, and the Jag was over $100 cheaper. The neck is a bit faster on the Jag as well, but if you like a thick baseball bat neck then it won't be for you. Also, the string-through aspect of the Mustang was off-putting to me. I mean, it's hard enough to find decent short scale strings. Finding medium scale strings (which the Mustang requires) that suited me was even harder. The neck pickup on the Jag is a true P-pup as opposed to the Mustang pup which I thought was brighter with a bit less low end.

This may be useful or meaningless to you, but I'd recommend starting with the Jag. If you don't like the Jag then I'm not sure you would like the Mustang any better. Of course, YMMV.

The squier mustang string scale is disappointing.
junior jet neck is more baseball like, fairly wide nut, expensive.
The jag SS is almost half the price new.
You can sometimes broncos popping up at GC for 69usd. Lots of inexpensive replacement pups available for it.
To hopefully throw in a wrench here's an essex pro SS model:
