anyone know anything about VOX bass amps?

Here's what I know - there's a big difference between how an amp performs on stage and how it performs for recording.

McCartney got a ton of GREAT bass recordings out of an AC100, often using the VOX 2x15 cabinet.

This may be a great way to go if you are after sounds like that.
If you are NOT - then this is probably NOT a good choice as it probably wont do much modern sounding stuff.

How exactly can an AC100 with a VOX 2x15 sound? AWESOME - and I'll provide a sound clip of a great emulation.

I have been watching this cat KOCUHU from Japan and his recordings are surprisingly accurate and reliable for YouTube videos.
He's using a VERY cheap simulation of the AC100 / 2x15 from the KORG Pandora mini.
Is it accurate? I'd have to say "basically" yes.
I have a lot of really good emulations of AC15's and AC30's as well as access to an AC30 and when I use those for bass and push the bass on the amp all the way up BOOM - it sounds a lot like his use of the AC100 emulator...just not as bass heavy.

I suspect the trick is to find an exceptionally well maintained old AC100, but that's going to be rare and expensive...that's why I am seeking really high quality software emulations of the AC100.

I doubt the AC100 can be brought back to life by any manufacturer these days...

Anyone know anything about any good AC100 software emulations?

I'm bringing this old thread back up since there seems to be some good information from people who know vintage vox bass amps here. It's one of the best resource i found so far from google so i wanted to share what I know and hopes to find out more myself...

I came across a Vox Kensington V124 accompanied by a Vox Wymann bass. I have evidence to suggest I got these items from the original owner who had them in posession in the 60's
the guy over at Voxguitars.net has been a big help with the bass, but i find little valuable information about this amp.

Units made by Jennings carry great value, Thomas not so much.

Even though this was posted a couple of years ago: The foundation 18" cabinet was about the worst thing that I ever owned. It and an AC50 became my very first amplifier. Mine didn't even have handles. I had to add them in order to carry the darn thing.

As for the AC100 it was a better amp but, because of restricted air flow, they did tend to catch fire.

Not wanting to start anything, and if I'm out of line, please let me know, but requiring a paid membership to ask a question about price is kind of a dumb rule, don't you think? Lots of guys (often beginners, who are often quite young) would like to be able to ask if the bass/amp they're thinking of buying or selling is worth what they're asking, or if it's worth the amount they're about to pay for it. They're only trying to prevent getting ripped off...

I don't question the rules or the Mods decisions in open. There is a great wealth of information on this site for all but it is not supported by advertising alone. I personally don't believe $20 US is a lot to ask to remove the very few restrictions placed on free members to keep this site alive and operating. :)

Asking if I got an okay deal I believe is an exception and looked at case by case. You can PM a Mod to be sure, they are all nice, fair people and are very approachable.

Vox bass amps are horrible. The best one I ever saw was one that a guy I know modified. It was actually a GK head housed in an AC50 stack with the trolley. And different speakers.

Now that I think of it, it may have been a Super Beatle.

When i think of an online forum I consider a balance in trade of information. I never ask for more than i put in. the value in the forum, from my point of view as a user, comes from the user generated content, that's why i try to be as giving as I am in asking.

I appreciate the costs associated with running vbulletin, especially a modded version, however i will not pay for public content and I will certainly not allow my freely provided content to be sold either. with 2765 active users on a monday morning, if you aren't covering your nut with advertising you are doing something wrong.

rules are rules. i appreciate and respect them. my post has been edited both to remove my guideline violation and also to remove any value i provided.

I enjoy coming to TalkBass and trying my best to help folk resolve their problems. I don't consider this an exchange of information. It IS information, freely given, gleaned from a lifetime of playing and engineering. As you see I am a gold supporting member with the rights and privileges that brings. I consider a buck a week as cheap for the enjoyment that it brings.

I got a 120 watt Westminster with 118. Then I got another 118 . This was in 1970 and I had just seen Paul Revere and the Raiders and kicked some serious top 40 hits with their all-Vox ampline. They were loyal to Vox. Vox should make a whopper bass amp and I will get one!
