Rotosound, 77 and superwound. And I cannot imagine expecting to uncover his tone by analyzing his amps, anymore than you can uncover Jamerson's tone by knowing he played through a B15 or a Kustom.

Hi there, just a new boy in town, brushing off the dust of this topic. I'm heavily interested in any tips here.
I have a Sterling by MusicMan Stingray 5 and a Tech 21 bass Flyrig. I'm not sure if, with this setup, I can hold a candle to the master but I'll take anything to get at least closer to him.

If I would try to emulate his recorded sound I would not use an amp. Maybe a tube DI or something but basically just straight in. Bass wise I would use P with flats or rounds, or a Stingray for a different vibe (another one bites the dust for example). What he used for live amplification is probably different and changed a lot. Just focus on getting the sound right with your hands.
