Anyone mixed speakers?

I've recently acquired a Fender Pro 400 Bass Combo, and would like to upgrade the speakers. I play a 5 st. and would like a "clearer, more articulate" bottom end. My bass tech suggested I put in an Eminence Legend BP102 and a Legend B102 - he said guitarists mix speakers in their cabinet all the time - that bassists are just a little slow to catch on! Both use the same wattage but have a different frequency response. What do you think?

There is absolutely no need to match the brands of all your gear. Doing so would severely limit your options.

Edit: I just read your post again, you're probably gonna want a new amp if you want a "clear articulate bottom end." At first I thought you were talking about mixing cabinet brands.

No. The bass is not a guitar and cannot be treated as such. If you have an open backed cabinet like most guitar combos you can mix speakers with out too many problem. Bass speakers NEED to be matched to their enclosure. if you do as your so called tech suggests you will probably damage one or possibly both of your new speakers. Do a search on replacement speakers.

*ahem*

i think he means to put two different kinds of speakers into one enclosure, as he so clearly put it in his original post.

to the OP: you can, but there's no guarantees. it's usually best if your speakers are matched to the enclosure, and vice versa.

OK- true confessions. I was getting a little bored w/my Redhead (240hp), liked the features of the Pro 400. Decided the Redhead has a "tighter" sound which I prefer, especially on my fless. SWR used PAS speakers which I and about everyone else has blown. Read that Legend BP102's are good replacements for either combo. Think I'm going to end up w/either sound or features - I'll take sound. If I replace the OEM PAS spkrs in the Redhead w/BP 102's,(nobody seems to like the idea of my mixing very similar BP102's and B102's) I'll have stronger, louder speakers, but do I take the chance of altering my sound?

Vas, Xmax, and Fs are quite a bit different. You'd end up with a difference in sound unless you could find the original specs on the PAS drivers and use replacements with very similar specs.
