Double Bass Anyone playing a Nick Lloyd bass?

I have never had the chance to play or see one in person, but they seem to be rising to the tops for new American Luthiers.
Checking on his backlog and pricing.

I know his one fame is creating an Edger Myer bench copy. He seems to specialize in smaller 3/4 sized instruments (though I'm sure all sizes are on the table for discussion).

Quality in photos and some players - seem top notch!

I had the opportunity to play Paul Kowert's. Beautiful bass, but given his tuning I had a hard time really getting much of a feel for the instrument.

My funny (to me, at least) story - at this camp they had a room where folk stored their instruments. Room wasn't locked, but camp location was pretty remote. Late at night I really didn't want to haul my bass to my car, but I was dubious about leaving it in an unlocked room. But when I realized Paul's bass was lying there, I just tucked my cheapass Englehardt in behind it and trusted that any thief would be competent enough to pick his over mine! ;)

Nnick is a beast. I wrote a review on #34 many years ago (https://chrisfitzgeraldmusic.com/do...s/?wpdmdl=917&refresh=6831a698156481748084376) and it was an incredible instrument. He’s only gotten better since then. I forget the number, but the bass I played at the 2023 ISB convention was just incredible. I look forward to seeing his latest work in about a week in Tallahassee.

He did the setup on my main bass about 20 years ago and I haven’t touched it since. Having him set up the bass was an amazing experience, because he asked me to sit and play for about 10 minutes and walked around and looked and listened before deciding how to cut the bridge, where to put the post, and how much camber to put in the board. That setup has basically become part of my technique at this point.

He’s also a total nut. One of the funniest and most irreverent people I know. If you can afford one of his basses, go for it! You won’t be disappointed.

I communicated with Nick. He will be in FL. I'll only be there Thurs And Friday but will be meeting him. I would melt to be in a camp with Paul Kowert....he is beyond human. Being a fiddle player I just amaze at how he can effortlessly play shuffle bowed fiddle tunes in thumb position like it's nothing. I'm very very excited to attending the ISB this year....so many dealers, builders. And players to meet and see.

I own Nick Lloyd's #53. It is a 7/8 size instrument with a spruce top and walnut sides and back. I have played many very fine basses in my life. But none compare or come close to just how incredible my Nick Lloyd bass is. This is my forever bass and it is a joy to play. Everything about this bass is perfect from the craftsmanship, overstand, you name it. If you can afford one, do yourself a favor and buy one.

They are among the very best basses I've ever played. Mark Dresser has a new one on the way:
"Lloyd #65, 5 string with Chromatic C-Extension, travel neck, maple roundback commissioned by Mark Dresser. This bass will be in my booth at ISB Convention as well as in performance by maestro Dresser."
