I really dig my new Gibson SG Faded Worn Cherry bass and I think for $800 it's an excellent axe. But I wanted to make just a couple of changes. I dumped the infamous '3-point' bridge and installed a Hipshot, which is really cool! Next I ordered some Hipshot tuners because the Grovers that it came with don't have as good of a turning ratio. But I see now that they are NOT an exact factory fit. The screw holes are not in the same place, but that's no big deal to me. Here's the problem though; the 'collets' for the HS's are a smaller diameter than the Grovers. So what do I do now?? I guess I could glue the collets in the head stock... I'd use the Grover collets but then the Hipshots don't stick out far enough.
So I wonder if anyone out there has tried this type of replacement. I'm on the fence now as to whether I should just go back to the 'stock' Grovers or go ahead with the Hipshots. The Hips are a little lighter and the plating is not as good I would say, but I think the higher tuning ratio would be a good upgrade. Whadda you think??
