Double Bass anyone tried tc electronics amp for upright/string bass?

The TC rig is pretty hyped up and generic sounding, IMO. I've only tried them with EB, they didn't seem like a good candidate for upright. But to each their own. Are you near a TC dealer? Maybe you could audition one in a shop.

I was thinking about one of these for the same reasons, but now I'm thinking the EA iAmp Doubler, which does have 2 channels especially set up for upright/elec doubling seems like a better idea for less dough. I haven't actually tried the Doubler yet - gotta get down to Bass NW to do so.

Apparently, Chris Minh Doky, is using a RH 450 as a touring amp. Here is a link to the TC Electronics video where he talks about the amp. Pretty cool actually. He only uses a Yamaha silent bass as his demo. Somewhere there is also a video of him with a string section using the TC 450 live on stage.

That's a pretty old video. I've not been able to find anything more recent with him using it. I like mine for EUB and BG, but it's just too much work for me for DB. The EQ is flexible enough that you can get a useable sound, but it's far from transparent. It does a great job of emulating an old Ampeg-style tube amp (the RH450, that is), and some like that vibe for DB in some settings, but for me the Markbass F1 with the fdeck HPF in front works far better. Interestingly, I can get a more DB-ish sound out of the EUB with the TCE amp than the Markbass. Perhaps it's the baked-in tubey compression and the rolled-off highs, maybe it's something else altogether, but it works really well. The on board tuner, compressor and overdrive, along with the 4 band semi-parametric EQ and 1 Mohm input impedance are all great features, some more helpful than others for DB.

Well, since you actually own one and gig with it, I'd say you have a much better take on what it will do, than I would. I think from a practical standpoint, Minh Doky maye have that found the set it and forget it features of that amplifier, combined with it's portability and weight, perfect for all the touring he does. I'm less partial to the sound of the Markbass F-1, for DB, which is now a collectors piece since Markbass has evidently discontinued it, along with the F500, that I liked. I guess they didn't sell enough units to keep it in production. Weird:confused:

I'll agree with you on the Markbass - I think it's far from ideal, but it's what I have (I bought both amps before I started playing DB, the RH450 after I started playing EUB). I will eventually get something else, but it's low on my list of priorities. All my gigs right now are on trombone, we (my wife and I) are about to travel to the US for a few weeks, and we've just signed on a new house (it's all about timing, right?), so my GAS is on an enforced hiatus.

Congratulations on the house, always a life changing event, IME.
I'd love to see New Zeland some day, but I'm not sure I could do the plane flight. Yeah, I think your GAS is definitely out of the picture for quite some time, but hey, you get a nice vacation and when you return you get to live in new digs. That's a pretty nice one two punch! You already have two nice amps with the F-1 and the RH 450. Small, light, good sound, and current amp topology. You're set.

Thanks, man -- I appreciate the good wishes. A pretty heady end to 2012 :). I certainly have no complaints about my current situation -- all good problems to have!
