Anyone Using Outboard Preamps???

I think that people like the Sadowsky because it doesn't change the tonal characterstics of Fender basses, whereas a lot of the units people have mentioned do and impart their own characteristics more than the bass itself. I think people like the classic Fender sounds they have heard on records, but usually you can't quite get that sound with just the bass into most amps - adding the Sadowsky pre-amp gets the sound that classic Fender lovers want without making the sound more "modern" or somehow different. Mid-controls are irrelevant in this situation, as this would alter the characteristic Fender sound beyond recognition, which is not the idea.

Geez, gotta follow this board more closely. I've been looking for a DI and found some good suggestions here.

FWIW, Bass Player magazine has a comparison of different DIs in its current Bass Gear publication. They like the SansAmp and Radial Engineering JDV.

I spoke to one of the guys at BassNW yesterday about the Sadowsky and the Aguilar units. It seems that the both units were designed by none other than Alex Aguilar so in essence they are the same unit in different packaging. The specs are the same, though.

I'm intrigued by the K&K unit. What experience does anyone have with these?
