Double Bass Are Labella jazz strings still good for an orchestral setting?

Hi Everyone,
So I just purchased some Labella 7710 black tape wound strings for my double bass and because I'm also in the orchestra I was wondering can you use these jazz strings in also a orchestral setting? I'm in the jazz combo at my high school and also in the orchestra and my teacher said that we have to give you two basses because they won't work in an orchestra as well. I don't really want to switch between two basses because I'm so used to my bass right now so it'll be just a huge annoyance. Any help would work! Thank you so much.

Hi, in my experience, the bow wont grip to the smooth surface at all, no matter what kind of rosin and how much you use it. For bowing you have to sand the bowed area until it has rough enough surface. If I remember correctly, there`s bowed example in string comparison matrix ( google it or do a search here on TB ) on Labella black nylons and that bassist ( Jeanne Hervre? ) has propably done that to his strings. The La Bella 7720 are better for pizz and arco than any synthetic wound string.
Roughing up the bowed area with very fine sandpaper and very little pressure and then putting some rosin directly on the string makes bowing possible with synthetic wrapped strings, but I don't think you would be happy to use these kind of strings in the orchestra.
