Are the New Brands stealing old designs?

I have noticed lately that most of the new stuff coming out (from $200-$5000+) resembles other brands.

I realize that there are only so many different things you can turn a slab of wood into but lately, many basses seems to look like a Fender, Spector/Warwick, Ken Smith, kinda that Curbow style and even Yamaha (and a few others that don't come to mind).

What NEW would you consider an original design?

IMO? Lace Helix is real different... Minorak is different in a BC Rich kinda way.... a Pedula Rapture might be a bit cutting edge....

Isn't this the same body?

I know the Jazz bass body has been copied forever, but this seems like a unique body style. Maybe the same factory? Monkey with the CNC router settings a bit?

well, there are only so many variations of what Leo did back in the day... Turns out he had most of it right... But every few years, someone has new (and good) idea... Music man came out with big dual coil pickups (whoops - there's Leo again)... Then the whole "soapbar" pickup thing happened... Then Lakland came around with mixing a MM and a J, so lots of folks do that now...

As for bodies - they will all end up looking like a variant of a fender body (unless you're talking Steinberg or Hofner - but notice how small a slice of the market THEY are). The now famous "Double Cutaway" body is just a good design.

And my, my - that IS a big bridge on that Traben...

When I can buy a Carvin that looks like a Fodera Imperial it will be a good day for me

do the reverse, have Fodera make you a 6k Carvin-copy and have them call it a Fodera-Carvera

Definatly, I'd guess bot came from the Cort factory, which is strange, as I have a Cort which is almost identical to a Ibanez too.

And my, my - that IS a big bridge on that Traben...

Goes about an inch into the body too as a solid block of metal.

These are totally different, the truss rod adjusts at the other end

There seems to be a lot of truth to this, though it is not universally and always true.

Fender invented the modern bass
Steinberger had another original idea
Everything else is just a version of the above IMO.

i can't seem to remember what that reminds me off...

anyways it kinda bothers me with all theirs copied instrument out, what ever happened to your own ideas. I've never been a fan of fenders and there body designs but there so over copied and used as templates that they kinda formed the way the guitar/bass looks

If you consider the variations of other instruments,violins,woodwind,whatever, Guitars are already hugely diverse. It gets to a point where form interrupts function.I dont see people complaning that fender copied body shapes on their acoustic guitars...funny that...
