ARE WARWICK DOLPHINS GOOD FOR SLAP ??

I was talking with a fellow TALK BASS brother, from another mother, and we were talking about Warwick Dolphins. He loves Warwicks, and that's why he sold his Peavey Cirrus. I bought the Peavey Cirrus from him, and now he can go buy a Warwick. After we spoke, I looked up a Dolphin on line, and saw one for the first time. I slap. He doesn't. Are Warwick Dolphins good for slap ? They are absolutely gorgeous basses.

Are you talking about Paul Turner? I've only ever see him play MusicMan, Fender, and Alleva Coppolo. Although I could be wrong.

As far as a Dolphin for slap, well, you're the only one that can tell us that.

Stuart Zender played a Streamer Stage 1 in Jamiroquai before Paul Turner joined them. Dunno about Dolphins though, although they look stunning.

When I bought my Infinity SN, I also played a Dolphin SN and nearly bought it instead. I slap pretty often.

They SN dolphin and SN infinity sound practically identical, the dolphin's looks put a few people off but it's magic to play. Get one!

Note; this experience relates to the set neck model which I believe is discontinued.

I've been using a Infinity SN for the past 3.5 years. Awesome tonal range! Great for Slapping, especially with that push pull slap contour switch. The Dolphin is the same exact preamp so it should do the same tricks. I love my SN but I'm slowly getting ready to part with it so i can have 19mm spacing and have more room to dig into my bass. I feel pretty spoiled with the SN's great EQ and diverse tone. I would recommend this bass or the dolphin for slap or any other tone any day!

I've had 3, 2 Pro 1s (a '91 and a '96) and a bolt on Pro 2. They're pretty good for slap, although I feel there are better slap basses out there. The newer SNs are rather darker sounding IME, though saying that all 3 of my basses sounded different, as they always will. The '96 Pro 1 was actually my least favourite, despite the Pro 2 having a less than stellar rep. Bear in mind the newer ovangkol-necked ones feel & sound quite a bit different to the old wenge-necked ones. I loved the looks of my Dolphins, but found the ergonomics a bit weird.

It's scary to me that someone out there thinks of Paul Turner 1st when naming Jamiroquai's bassist; that makes me feel really old! I know he's the current bassist, but Stu was the bassist in what's generally considered the classic line up. Paul is still the bassist in Boyzone to me (which is the gig he had when I first met him at the Bass Gallery)!

you can play slap style on any bass, the question is wether the tone and feel would be right for you.

Steffan Lezard (not sure about the spelling here) played a Dolphin on most DMB's albums and you can hear the distinctive Warwick burpy tone all over the place, especially on the live albums.

From experience I can say 'yes'. They are. They have do have that unique Warwick tone but they sound great when slapped IMO.

Don't worry. The ONLY bassist I think of when I think of Jamiroquai is Stu. And I'm only 19, so there are some people out there who think the same way as you Although, he is officially my favourite bass player, so...



Anyway, back OT: I've never played a Dolphin, but I have never played a Warwick that wasn't good for slap (except for the $$ models - I found that the pickups got in the way, and that is probably just personal opinion.

+1 - Stu can lay down a groove. He will always be the bass player (to me) when Jamiroquai is mentioned. His playing has influenced me heavily over the years.

This was my baby for quite some time. Great all around bass. I slapped the crap out of this thing!!! Best balancing bass on a strap......wayyyyyy too heavy though. It had to weigh 13lbs. Just a boat anchor. I miss this thing though.

Just a quick chime in. The answer is YES. I slap a lot at home, less at gigs ( hehe ) but my Dolphin is easily slapped, sound is sweet, I favor the neck pickup for it.

as for warwick, they always seem to use the right woods but something about those basses i just dont go for. are they common among jazz cats? i think the only bass player i can recall seeing with one was jack bruce..and im not so hott for him either..
