Are you subconsciously

I'm impressed and I agree.
Jauqo MCMLXIX seems to be doing just what you're accusing James of...

How so? I asked a question. I didn't tell any one how their mind may be working or what process it may be going through while being musical.

And it's III-X. I don't know if that was your attempt to be funny but I didn't dis your name.

Well be solicited or not here's my 2 cents......

Those few brief moments when I'm in "the zone" are what makes all of this worthwhile!!!

There are several times(usually durung the first set) when my mind is running 50 different directions, wondering if my levels are ok(we don't use a soundman), are we playing too fast/slow, trying to lock in with the drummer, etc...... but I find that I'm still playing more/less "dead on".

One thing I never do is consiously "count" while I'm playing, I go strictly by feel ans always end up being where I'm supposed to be. Obviously I know what time signature I'm playing but I'm never thinking about it........

Not so much in that manner, when I'm in the moment, and I'm on; I find that I've separated everything that's going on at the moment. I've got the guitar in one part of my head, the vocals broken down, drums as well, and the bass of course.

It's a great feeling when I manage to achieve it, kind of a total awareness moment.

Without getting bogged down in the definitions of conscious vs. sub conscious debate that this thread has seemed to get derailed with I'll give you my dos centavos.

For me I've learned over the years that the most important thing to be aware of is the overall sound of the band, whether I'm walking a chill baseline, riffing away at a guitar solo, or attempting a funky groove on the drums. Listening is the most important skill you will ever develop as a musician. It is after all a craft based on sound.

When I'm playing the muscle memory is already there thanks to a zillion hours of practice and random noodling, so my fingers know where they're supposed to go. I'm not thinking about theory at all. I'm not thinking about "Ok since they're playing a B#m7b5add17 in 19/16 time, mathematically I need to play this!" I don't care at that point. Can I predict and plan each individual note, think of a melody in my head then play it? About the half the time. I'm good but not good enough to always nail the right note or the one I'm looking for. Will it be in key? Yes, thanks to far too many years spent running through my scales. You never know what will come out while you're playing and adlibbing your parts. That's part of the fun really.

So in summary, should you know your theory and your scales and all of that? You betcha. Should you be number crunching while playing a gig? Hell no, it's too late for that. Use your ears and listen to what's going on around you. Then just lay back and enjoy the ride. :hyper:

(:hiding: Disclaimer: For the theory Nazis the B#m7b5add17 in 19/16 time bit is a sarcastic exaggeration in case you didn't get it, so leave it be. ;))

I've always suspected that on some, deep down level I was aware that I was playing the bass

One time we were playing some Bob Wills tune that we'd played about a gazillion times before, three minutes long, tops, and somewhere in there I had this out of body experience and was actually more fully in central Mississippi, picking cotton and singing spirituals in the hot, noon-day sun.

I mean, I was drunk, but still.

Jauqo while I love talking of subconscious and conscious, and James, awareness, I didnt always understand it as well as I do today. Some people may still not have spent much time thinking about that kind of thing, to do their research. So their responses right now may be filled with defense mechanisms, caused by a feeling of inferiority with regards to knowledge of the topic.

Whew!

But rock on everyone, we are talking about bass here. Just opinions, chit chat. Remember, everyone is here by choice, and responding out of free will. You can always just stop if you are not enjoying yourself.

Right?

You mean the research of folks like Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett, or David Chalmers?

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty well versed in all of these ideas and more.

You may be slightly underestimating the TalkBass community here.

Right?

Daniel Wegner would have some issues with you about the fact that you are here out of "free will". In his research, free will doesn't exist - it's an illusion.

But on the other hand, the mathematician John Conway has developed an argument called the Free Will Theorem that not only allows for the existence of free will, but that free will is a fundamental aspect of elementary particles.

But, I'm sure you already knew that. ;)

I did.

Hey now... there will be NO book learnin talk mixed into the bassin round here :smug:

Anyway, nothing but love for JAUQO III-X... I was just trying to get my head around the question and answered what I assumed it to be in my first post (#10 in the thread).

zenrad: I must have missed your post... I would have quoted you if I had.

Figjam: the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know!
