Sorry in advance if there's already a thread on this but I was looking at an ARY French bow on Lemur and was wondering if anybody has tried these bows before. I desperately need a new bow and don't want to pay more than $1000. Thanks!

Double Bass ARY French Bow

I played one years ago from Lemur. I wound up buying the W. Seifert I was auditioning as well. This was back when the Seifert bows where around $400 and Ary $275. I recently got a chance to play the Metropolitan by David Gage. It is a much better stick then both the bows I just talked about and you can find it for about $800 with a case. I will be buying one of these soon to keep as my backup.
I am currently playing an Ary France 500 pernambuco German bow, which I purchased from Lemur 2 years ago. This one draws an even tone, from frog to tip, and is well balanced. It is a better bow than I am capable of playing.
I auditioned an Ary bow for about a week with 3 other bows. I was really impressed by its lightness and comfort. It was the most comfortable bow of the 4. I thought the sound it pulled was a little light for me. I ended up with a bow by Muniz . So if you can get your bow supplier to send you a few bows in your price range you could try them out. Good luck

Seattlebassist, try to find a dealer that has a few bows in your price range to audition on your bass. I would like to hear what you think of Ary vs. The Metropolitan if you can get a hold of them at the same time to audition.

The most expensive was the Arcus Sinfonia at 1500 sterling. It's a strange beast. Amazingly light and a huge sound but far too long and the sound was strange. A synthetic kind of sizzle that some people might like.
Initial reaction was for the Ary and I would still like one as a back up but it was a little under in volume. The Muniz was underwhelming initially till I spent some time with it. The Werner didn't figure at all. Too wimpy.
All in all the Muniz had that mixture of comfort , sound quality, good bounce. I can't see myself outgrowing it for many years if at all.
Thanks for all of the info everybody! I'm going to call Lemur tomorrow and try it out. I've been trying out a few bows lately but cheaper that the ARY. I tried the Carbow carbon fiber and it wasn't for me. I'll let you know how it works for me. Hopefully its as good as everyone I've talked to says it is!
