Obviously inspired by the thread concerning our favorite drummers.

My favorites are Fabrizio Leo, Shawn Lane, Vivien Lalu, John McLaughlin,
and Ron Jarzombek.

EDIT: Good lord, I almost forgot about Frank Zappa! Although I think of him as a composer first and a guitarist second.

The one in my band, first and foremost. I've known him for years, and would have said that when I wasn't playing with him, too.

John McLaughlin, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, and Walter Becker, who's really under-rated IMO, Al DiMeola, and Andy Summers

Note that many of these guys have worked with the world's top bassists, too. Hmmm...

- Chet Atkins (also proficient at providing his own "bass" accompaniment)
- Jeff Beck (the only guitarist to bring me to tears from the sheer beauty of his playing - "Where Were You" Skydome Toronto, 1989)
- Eric Clapton (the only guitarist to bring me to tears from the sheer intensity of his playing - "Third Degree" Royal Albert Hall London, February 2004)
- David Gilmour
- Mike Keneally (mindblowing like Frank Zappa but you can also hum along).

I certainly like all of Pedro's picks. For myself, I'm going to go with true favorites, not necessarily the most accomplished technically, fastest, etc. I put these guys on when I want to hear guitar work:

-Michael Bloomfield: every guitar wanker should be required to listen daily to "Albert's Shuffle" and "Stop" from Super Session.

-Albert King: I love the blues and this Albert most of all. He can say more with fewer notes than anyone. In "I'll Play The Blues For You", he puts on a clinic in how to repeat the same lick in countless, different ways.

-Bobby Womack: my favorite classic soul guitarist. Bobby plays half the beautiful guitar work found on Wilson Pickett's "I'm In Love" and invented that particular style.

-Lonnie Mack: As close to wanking as I can enjoy. Lonnie is lightening fast, but he also knows how to develop a a solo, build a song and sing the blues. I was in a band many years ago with a tremendoous guitarist and we opened with "Wham". He didn't use a capo--he played it from the F-position! I never tired of that song (or Lonnie's other material) and it always brought a smile to my face.
