Ashdown Little Bastard $400

I took the plunge as well! I've always wanted a low wattage bass tube head, and the LB seemed to fit the bill, but I've had a hard time justifying the price for an item that really isn't a necessity. Thanks Musicians Friend for making it an easy decision today! Oddly enough, just last night I was trying to figure out what I could sell to land a SVT in Craigslist I saw...the Ashdown will hopefully have that craving satisfied now.

I missed the head but they subbed the Ashdown Touring 220W 1x15 Tube Pre Bass Combo Amp Black for $379 (normally $749). I'm still in the combo stage and probably will be for a while as I like to crank my stuff. My neighbors should thank me for not buying a stack!

Anyway what do you guys think of this Ashdown amp?

Cheers!

I love mine (bought from classifieds about a month ago). It does not have a gain adjustment so, if you want to hear some nice distorted sound at low practicing volumes, you may want to invest in a cheap clean boost pedal. My sub 40$ EHX LPB-1 makes it sound amazing.

This little guy is pretty loud. I think most people will be surprised how loud a mere 30 watts is going to be. I've only had the volume up to 11 O'clock pushed into a Genz UBER 212 and it was waiting for my family (or the neighbors) to come tell me to knock it off. That seemed to be the sweet spot for me between always warm and fat but giving great breakup when slamming it. I'm doubtful you could gig a rock band with, and unfortunately I'm not in one right now to find out and report back to you.

Really powerful EQ with a lot of options.

This thing sounds awesome. I forgot how much I absolutely love full-tube amps.

I don't trust those fries :D I think it was 25 years ago, me and my family were a trip to Belgium and ate fries at a typical belgium "fritkot". The "mayonaise" was some kind of clotted fat... Maybe it's better these days :smug:
The waffles are great though, had some in Brugge :p

Clotted fat??!?!! Now I'm really insulted...:hiding:

What we have in Belgium is real mayo...not the runny, tasteless stuff the rest of the world calls by the same name...and it should have been even better 25 years ago...:D:D:D:D

Hmmm...what's this thread about again:bassist:

If I had to come up with some dislikes:

* Hard to tell it's on. Every product these days has retina-searing LEDs all over them. This has none. Just a dimly lit VU meter. I keep leaving it on all of the time in mute, forgetting it's powered up.
* Smells bad up close. This is really picky, but it does have a good case of hot-tube-smell, I'm guessing it's the chassis off-gassing some manufacturing toxins from the heat. :p

Also makes a pretty awesome sounding clean guitar amp with plenty of ear piercing highs on top if you want. Some suggested settings to start with for guitar use (and for my own re-use)

* Mid= 8 O'clock, shift off
* Bass= 1 O'clock, shift on
* Treble = 1 O'clock, shift off

Tube amps are supposed to smell bad. I have an old unlabeled (Sears??) g***** amp that hasn't worked in decades. I keep it around just so I can take a whiff every now and then...

This one had a specific burning paint / oil /something type smell. Not at all like the normal burning dust or steam radiator type smell of most tube amps.

It's mostly gone now after a handful of hours with hot tubes cooking it. :)

It does make a decent guitar amp but I actually gigged with mine last night. It performed a little better than I expected with my passive bass it had enough volume through my mesa 4x10 but dont expect clean. It was driven into overdrive so if your into gritty creamy tube OD it may be for you. Now keep in mind my guitar player plays a Koch and he ran it on 25 watts but plenty loud for the bar we were at. All that being said I think a clean boost pedal might be beneficial but at least for me it worked pretty well.
