Assembling a Power+Pre amp Rig

You buy a preamp and a poweramp that are matched fairly closely with output to input sensitivity, put them in a rack, plug the out from the preamp into the in of the poweramp, then you are ready to rock.

Simple as that.

How would I go about assembling a power+pre amp rig with now bass head?

I am assuming you meant to say "How would I go about assembling a power+pre amp rig with the bass head I now have?"

It is easy. Your bass head needs to have an effects loop. This is an input/output pair that allow the signal to be taken from your bass head's built in pre-amp, passed through a effect (compressor, fuzz, wah, etc.), and then return the signal to the input of your bass head power amp section.

So, if your bass head has that circuit, get an external pre-amp, plug your bass into it, and pass the pre-amps's output to where the effect output signal would go.

Terms for the effects loop in and out vary, so check your amp head manual.
What kind/model bass head do you have?
