Double Bass Attaching something to a fingerboard

I wonder if they had velcro and superglue when Ron Carter was a lad?

I'm currently studying with Robert Hurst, and he said that he did the velcro thing when he was studying with Ron Carter. Actually my high school Jazz band leader, Mike Grace, studied with Ron Carter too (and taught Bob in High School) and he said that they used tape instead of velcro. That would probably be in the 70s.

So how big of a piece os velcro are we talking about? A small or large dot, or large rectangle. Beginner mind wants to know.
