Double Bass Audio Technica ATM 35 Question

Hi all,
I have had an AT PRO 35 for years and had good success with it, but just found an old ATM 35 used. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use the power module from the PRO 35 (AT 8538) with the ATM 35? I don't need the phantom power from the older power module from the 35 and it seems like it would be more convenient than needing to plug a mic cable into the old "box" power module from the 35.

The ATM35 shipped with the AT8532 power module, but both mics have a 2-conductor cable terminated in a TA3F connector. The phantom power requirements for both mics are listed as 11-52V, 2mA typical. The spec sheets do not list the voltage the power modules supply to the capsule, if any. So AFAIK, this is the only area of concern. My understanding is there should be either a FET or transistor on the capsule, which would require power.

Your best bet is to contact Audio Technica Tech Support and see if they have engineering documents that can provide an answer about the voltage fed to the capsule.

Or simply measure with a voltmeter.

These are electret capsules with a built-in JFET. They typically get a voltage of 1.5 to 12 volts. If the voltage is in this range they shouldn‘t do any harm, specially if it is roughly the same with both adapters. If it would work or work well is a different thing, but you can try.

Personally I would rather use the older adapter. You only need an XLR to TS adapter cable. I got a short one with my old ATM 35.

I just measured it for you:
Hot+ to tip
Hot- to sleeve
Ground to sleeve
I prefer to be able to use the battery adapter without a battery using phantom power to FOH (or phantom powered amp input). No dependency on battery charge that way. And you can still use the battery if no phantom powered input is available.
And with the short adapter cable you can use a longer mic XLR-cable to get to the amp and use the adapter there. Usually plenty available at any stage in case yours might get broken.

I use an AT8542 with my 35. Contact AT. They are very helpful in this regard.

Hi all,
I decided to stick with the stock power module and let the other one go with my PRO 35 I'm selling. Any of you have a sweet spot you like for these? Seems like between the bridge feet is working best for me while mounting it on the adjuster.

i love this mic but hate the cli- and gooseneck. what i did was order the longer, beefier gooseneck with a screw-on mount, and now i can get the mic right to the spot you mentioned without worrying about it falling off. about 80 bucks but if you really love the mic it’s worth it. it’s my poor man’s DPA.....
