Avalon M5 or UA Solo 610

Those two seem to be in the same league:
  • DI and Mic preamp
  • High Z and Low Z selection
  • Tube

The price is twice for the M5 (at ~$1500).
Is the M5 really worth the difference?

I am looking for a tube mic-preamp for recording. If it can be used as a DI it's a plus.
My double bass has a realist pickup under the bridge. I would like to record the bass using both a microphone next to the holes and the signal from the Realist piezo. Then try blending both in various ways.
I own the Avalon U5 and really like the sound but it doesn't do mic preamp and it's not tube...

Any experience? Comments? Suggestions?

I don't have direct experience with these units (only the channel strip "equivalents", the LA-610 and 737), but would also suggest taking a look at the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It's a bit cheaper than the Solo 610, and matches the criteria you listed above.

You get a vote for the LA610.
Also look into the ADL600. we have a few here and I have to tell you that I'm really impressed with them. You get two channels for about $1600.

610 softer more organic sounding , Avalon is cleaner with more high end chirp

I woud take the 610 but question is do you want tubes or not.


Most classic recordings you have listened to are not tube based mic pre's (Neve API, Helios, EMI, Pye etc)

I have owned the 2-610 and currently have an Avalon U5 I only use as a DI to go into my Helios.
