Avalon U5 DI Out

Hello Everyone,

I was going to write an email to Avalon Company but they don't accept emails due to spam anymore so I hope you can help me...

I want to connect my bass to Avalon U5's input.

And then from Avalon U5's Balanced Output MicLevel 150 Ohm to my M-Audio 48V Mic Input and then through my M-Audio SoundCard's Headphone Input, I could to be able to listen to my bass with the tracks in my computer with a headphones...

Is it possible?

If not, which Bass Amp do you guys recommend me which has a DI output so I could connect my bass to it and then from that to my SoundCard's 48V. Mic Input and then I could be able to listen to my bass with the headphones through my Soundcard's headphone input?

Sounds like what you need is a small mixer, if I read your question properly.

if they wont give customer service,look elsewhere. (and i am a proud avalon sp737 user). i would get a normal good countryman di. the avalon is nice, but i dont like the preset eq choices. they are good , but not tweakable.

Sounds like that should work. Are you using the M-Audio interface to record your signal, or just listen to it? If you just want to listen to your playing through headphones, you could just use the Avalon's headphone out.

Yes I will listen to it - I will use the M-Audio headphones instead of Avalon's headphones to listen because it is connected to the computer and I am listening to some mp3 and drum tracks from the computer also while I play bass...

With a small mixer you can put your bass through one channel and the output of your computer or MP3 player into another. They pretty much all have headphone outputs. Much simpler than trying to mate stuff to your sound card. They can be had for $40 odd if you look around.

You don't need the phantom power, just run the mic out of the U5 to the mic in on the M-Audio interface with the phantom power turned off, or better yet, run the 1/4" thru jack on the front of the U5 (with the Active to Thru switch engaged) to a 1/4" line in on the M-Audio interface, assuming it has a line in. What model is the M-Audio interface, is it an outboard unit or truly a PCI soundcard installed inside your computer?

I have gotten reply emails from Avalon last year. Also DO NOT run phantom power into the U5, that is what I asked them about and they said it would damage the u5

Phantom power is for powering microphones. You don't need that, definitely should NOT engage phantom power to the U5.

The U5 has line level and mic level outputs, both are XLR. Use whichever one matches best with your M-Audio. Start with the Boost control on the U5 at 4 or 5 and disengage the Tone circuit. Keep the master volume on the M-Audio DOWN, try each of the U5 outputs and watch the meters on the M-Audio. Ideally, you shouldn't have to run the U5 hotter than 5 or 6.

Once you've established a good overall signal level into the M-Audio, then you can experiment with the Tone settings...
