Greetings from the North,
Ummm......I just went to the Avatar web site and clicked on the bass cabs section, and at the bottom of it there were 210 cabs in assorted colours that I believe were in Tolex instead of rat fur. And I thought to myself,"self, that's pretty interesting". I then went back to the site a few minutes later and the pretty coloured Tolex cabs were gone. Is this new or old news?

Avatar will very soon be offering the entire bass cab line with the coloured Tolex. This info is directly from the Canadian distributor.

I personally don't mind the "rat fur" as it's more durable, coupled with the provincial smoking ban and the fact that I probably won't be leaving the province for gigs very often anymore (never say never).

But it DOES look very nice. :)

Greetings,
How about that, all of 'em in colours one day. Sort of reminds of ancient times when Kustom Tuck n Roll products came in different colours.
I stayed away from rat fur because it's hard to get clean. Stuff like parking lot mud, food, animal hair etc., can be a royal pain. Also the Lady of the house has a couple of cats that would rip them to shreds in short order. And before any one suggest gettin the cats declawed....I like living here and being homeless sucks.
Anyway this is something to ponder.....Tolex in fancy colours hmmm....

I fully agree that all of those variables are ENEMIES of the rat fur. But whenever I think of tolex, I harken back to my 25th Anniversary Marshall 2x15, and how the tolex ripped the first time I put the them in my car. And then I think of my 1st Edition Ashdown ABM 410 that had the SAME thing happen, and I'm VERY careful wth my gear. Then I had the Ampeg PR410HLF that was built like a tank!

Either way, I don't let anyone else hump my gear around when possible, so I know that if anything happens to it, it's MY fault, and I still try to avoid trouble at all costs. :D

As far as pet hair goes, a good brush is all you need. I know it seems silly, but brushing your "rat fur" cab will bring it clean of pet hair. As far as the cats go.........put the cabs in a closed room. :D

Greetings,
Cats are like dedicated terrorist. If they wanna destroy something they'll wait for the opportunity.
Your right about Tolex being easy to be torn. I've got one old Fender cab that's still in good shape only because I was around to move it most of the time. The time I wasn't there, cost me a 2" rip in the back but I fixed it.
I've got a Dr.Bass cab thats got that truck bed liner stuff on it and I really like that. All you do is wipe it off and Ta Da! All clean.

Sounds durable, but I've only got the rat fur on my cabs, and these are the last cabs I'll be buying for some time. The PR410HLF was an absolute TANK. The finish was beat all to hell on mine, and I still got a premium price on trade at L&M. Some Sharpie marker on the major dents, and that thing looked fairly new! Oh well, hopefully my Avatars last me a while!

I've also been interested in the colored Tolex cabs. If they offered some custom colors for the grills on bass cabs, I think I'd be in heaven. I'm not entirely what color to go with when I order my Neo 1x12". I'll probably spray paint the grill, and built a new cloth one for it as well.
