AWB with their original drummer!

I was wrong, this was Dave Kemper, a temporary drummer before Steve Ferrone joined the band.

I lived with Clyde Stubblefield in a multi-band house in Madison, WI for a couple of years in the early 80's. For any of you who don't know who he was ... he played drums for James Brown during his heyday from 1965 - 1970 and was the drummer on "Cold Sweat" (considered to be the dawn of funk music) and on "Funky Drummer" (which at one point ... maybe still ... is the most sampled groove of all time). He was a super nice guy and an incredible drummer. Anyway, his favorite band was the Average White Band so I would call that quite an endorsement for those Scottish funksters.

Info about Clyde Stubblefield, if you're interested ...

Clyde Stubblefield had a nice gig on a NPR gameshow, “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” that was recorded in Madison, WI for years.

AS to AWB, Rare Blend opened for them on August 5, 2006 at Lock3Live.

The founding AWB drummer was Robbie McIntosh (not the guitarist of the same name who played with Macca and the Pretenders). He died after snorting heroin that he thought was coke at a party in LA.

Ironically both Robbie and Steve Ferrone had played in Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express before joining AWB.

Ferrone with Auger, 1974, just before leaving for AWB. Barry Dean on bass.

Wasn’t Cher involved somehow with trying to revive Robbie?

Alan Gorrie was also there and also ODed, Cher was able to keep him alive long enough for the EMTs to get there. I wonder if Alan quit using drugs after that

AWB, the band that proved white men can jump…
I saw them once, in 1979. I was amazed that they could switch between bass players between songs and they both were killing it.
