I've got a '70s Pioneer SA-9100 and a set of '80s Paradigm Monitor 7 Series Speakers. Sounds fantastic. The SA-9100 is super warm. I thought getting a tube preamp for my turntable but my buddy said I wouldn't need it.
My favorite vintage system from the ‘50’s and early ‘60’s starts with a pair of Quad 57 electrostatic speakers. They were originally sold individually before stereo was a ‘thing.’ Driven by a pair of Quad II mono blocks with the 22 preamp, this ensemble really presented music in a way people had never heard before.
if you want to go a little more modern, a Naim Nait integrated amp from the early 1980’s does a magnificent job with the Quads.
My ‘70’s set up was a Linn/Naim 6 Pack. First, the front end was a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable with an Ittok arm and a Karma cartridge. The preamp was a Naim 32 with a SNAPS power supply. There were 6 Nail 135 mono power amps. A 3 way active crossover called a Naim Naxo that also used a SNAPS power supply. All played through a pair of Linn Isobarik PMS monitors. Hearing that system changes my perception of home audio.
In the ‘90’s I had a updated version of that system. I used an updated Linn Sondek LP12 with a Naim ARO arm and a Linn Troika cartridge with a Naim Armageddon power supply. The CD player was a Naim CDS with its own separate power supply. A Naim 52 handled preamp duties. A Naim 02 tuner was also in the mix. An SNaxo 2 way crossover, and a pair of Naim SBL’s delivered the music.
I’ve been very fortunate to have owned most of these components over the years and consider them to be among the finest, even by today’s standards, reproducers of music.

I do not have golden ears. Klipsch Heresy speakers from the late 70s, a Denon power amp from the early 80s and a Sony turntable for dragging a rock across vinyl. It works and I am happy. It has worked fine for decades.
When I was in high school I tried to acquire the best hi fi stuff I could afford off the used market.
By the time I was 20 I had:

-- Technics turntable
-- Fisher Studio Standard tuner/receiver
-- JBL 3 way speakers
