Assuming you mean the 8BG51 I see no reason to cross it lower than 2kHz, and if you don't mind the break-up mode at 2.5kHz you can go that high with adequate off-axis. That opens up the opportunity to go 2-way, making things far simpler and less expensive.

The driver starts to peak and dip nastily starting at 1khz. It's going to be a biatch for a novice to design a crossover well up there.

I know it's from previous threads but the OP has specified a desire to get flat response, IIRC, and crossing over above 500-600hz is going to mean using lots of corrective eq to get adequately smooth response.

If he just wanted small and low but wasn't concerned with flat response, I would agree that even 2500hz would be OK.

I meant the B&C. I wouldn't hesitate to cross the Faital at 3.5kHz.

So I've been thinking more about a 1x8 lately. I thought it might be better to start with a 1x8 just to make sure it actually sounds like I want before doubling any investment in parts. The speakers are one B&C 8B51 (or a Faital Pro 8PR200), two Faital Pro 3FE20 (800 Hz - 5 kHz), and one Morel MDT-40 (5kHz - 20 kHz). I picked the mid and tweeter based on size, off axis response and a nice flat FR in the ranges they are going to be used. I'm pretty sure that the mids and tweeter will keep up with the woofer, but are there any rules of thumb to use to make sure? Other than being expensive for this type of cabinet, are their any reasons why this combination may not be a good choice?
Here is what it would look like.

I know that the placement of the mids wouldn't be ideal if the cab were stood up on it's end (the mids would be horizontal, not vertical). Would the ill effect be less noticeable because they are small drivers (i.e. the centers are closer together)?

Unfortunately not. I've been side tracked with some bass repairs that I'm taking my time getting done.

I hope to do something with it, but I'm going to need to do a lot of reading on crossover design before I can even start thinking about making one.

Are you going for a flat three way or a bit lumpier two way? I'm sort of interested in an abstract way: How much SPL can a person get from such a small cabinet? It's an impressive little driver, but a bit rich for my taste - I can't justify that kind of a cash outlay given the cabs I already have.

I'll probably try for a flat three way. The max SPL is pretty low. Its probably a little better than an Acme B1. This design would be sacrificing SPL for low end extension.
