Back from band..

So.. I just got home from band practice, and, well, I'll fill you in.


We were recording a song - the stupidest song ever, it consists of power chords on 7777-55-77 on the E and then 5555 on the A.. the drummer and I absolutely hate this song. At our last show, people were actually bored by it, but still, the guitarist (who can't play guitar) and the singer (who is stubborn as hell) absolutely love it..
Lately the lead singer has been doing weird things.. like obsessed with multiple vocal tracks, and effects on the vocals.. which the drummer and I hate but him and the guitarist love.. he's changing our songs completely. anyways..

So we are all finished recording our parts, and the singer (who is also a rhythm guitarist), decides he wants to do another guitar track.. the drummer and I say no, but he does it anyways..

Drummer and I go away for about 10 minutes, come back, and listen to what he's done.
he recorded his part, and the worst part, he has a flanger or something on it. Drummer and I hated it, guitard loved it.:rollno:

this is where it gets interesting.

We tell him to take it out. He says no. Then, well..


me: take that track out, it sounds like crap
drummer: yeah
guitard: it sounds fine
singer: yeah, there's nothing wrong with it
me: maybe if dylan (drummer) liked it, it would be 3 against 1, but he doesn't so it's 2 against 2.. you can redo it with no effects if you want
singer: it doesn't really matter what you guys think
me: what?
singer: your parts aren't as important as ours
me: I think Dylan and I have just as much say as you guys
singer: no you don't, our parts are much more important, so we have more say then you guys do.


after about 10 minutes of this, he has the nerve to ask if he can come to my house to edit the song (I have Sony SoundForge, plus my computer has better everything then the guitards).. I simply tell him, "No".. so now he has to edit it on the guitards computer, which has sh*t all for editing programs, and it's slow as hell..

700 MHz & 512 MB of RAM (for you computer nerds out there).

I was so angry by his statement (bolded above), that I almost completely lost it..

What do you guys think?

P.S.. Sorry for the rant..

Hating to state the obvious, but it sounds like you have 2 camps in your band with very different ideas of what is good and what you should be doing. I would talk to your drummer and look to form a new band ASAP. I see a nasty power struggle if you try to keep this together. Leave as amicably as possible, but leave.

Sounds to me that your guitar player doesn't want to play nice... hate to break it to you, but your band isn't democratic anymore, which means all of a sudden, you are a hired gun, and singer is now a solo artist. Guitar player/singer obviously wants full control, so you and the drummer have some thinking to do. He also obviously looks down on you and the drummer, so why don't you show him how 'unimportant' drummers and bass players are and leave the band. I wouldn't be as angry about the writing control as I would be about the statements regarding how little drums and bass matter.

The Who helped build their reputation on the fact that they all hated each other. Supposedly, Entwistle and Daltrey couldn't stand each other, especially live - namely Daltrey thought The Ox always played too much and too loud. But Entwistle played how he played anyway, didn't give a damn.

If you do stick with this band, play how you feel you should play.

And if things get too dicey, start throwing punches. :bassist:

People who ask for advice on subjects such as this one usually already know the answer, but they don't like the answer, so they hope someone will tell them something different.
Sorry, no. You should bail; those guys are egotistical morons, and they aren't nearly good enough to get away with it. Bail. Bail, bail, bail. Buh-bye.

Time to walk.

I think you and the drummer will have a better time if you leave the band and found another one.

In my experience, good bassists aren't that common. Good drummers are even harder to find. Calmly tell them that because of musical differences, you and the drummer are leaving the band (though, of course, first talk to the drummer to make sure he agrees with this move).

It sounds like the guitard and singer aren't really worth working with because they're both too full of themselves.

Since the guitar part wasn't recorded clean, the singtard has nothing to compare the current recording with so no one can say the current recording is "better". It may sound good but that's not the point. Until it's recorded clean, it's all speculation.

The real point is that there's been a coup in the palace and you and the drummer are now the foot soldiers of the group. Just do what you're told and keep quiet.

If that's okay with you, it's okay with me. :eek:

Sounds like you and the drummer are tight - musically and the way you think. A good backline is a great start to a good band. Time to find a guitrarist and vocalist who share your attitudes. These other two you're with don't understand what a band is about, but if they get booted out of a few more, maybe they'll figure this thing out. Let someone else deal with them. Life's too short for that stuff.

I would have quit right there. If you do decide to stick it out, don't know why you would, you need to throw some high gain distortion, delay, and phase on every line. If they say something to you about tell them your part isn't important as theirs, and they can make up for it. Tell the drummer to play blast beats for every song. Same response as above. But yet again, I have no idea why you would still be with these guys.
