Hey everyone! Long time lurker here, finally emerging from the depths of old threads to say hello and ask for sage advice, or any advice really!
I took a long hiatus from playing music and recently came back to playing bass, which has always where I felt most comfortable. about 5 months ago I bought a Schecter Studio 5 for $200 and have been practicing without an amp. After a lot of deliberation I decided to go head and cab instead of a combo. Craigslist for the win again - I scored a MINT Epifani T112 made in USA (NYC version?) for $100 with a padded cover. Can't get much better than that! Now I am trying to decide what amp to get. I know the best way to know is to try them all, but I don't really have that option, within reason. There are some local heads for sale and I am considering all of them. There is the Epifani UL501, GK Fusion 800, MB500, 400RB, 700RBii, and a TC Electronic 500 watt with toneprint. From what I read, all of these amps have their strengths, some are classics, some are lightweight, etc. I would like lighter weight as I am carrying my gear to and from practice, but won't turn down a sweet deal on some heavier gear. Young guy with low back issues, not trying to be a hero!
I am playing in a 3 piece band and we are really groove-centric and blues/funk/jam inspired. We will be playing shows pretty soon and I would like to be prepared for outdoor sets without PA support. Mostly small backyard bbq's at friends homes, and then some sets at local coffee shops.
Given my requirements, and current cab, how much would you say is necessary regarding power, and should I be looking to add on to the T112? Maybe another T112 if I can find it? I'm not even sure if it is 8 ohm or 4, as the sharpie has faded on the back! Id like to spend around $500 or less on the head, maybe a couple hundred for another cab if I need it!
Thanks in advance!
