Has anybody had any grounding issues with the bridge? I find it very hard to belive that you have to sand it down to metal. If so, I see why they're not sold any longer.

Usually enough just to have the ground wire wrapped around one of the bridge screws. I solder a loop on my ground wires. Couldn't hurt to sand a bare spot on the bridge too. Where the ground wire will meet the bridge varies a little bass to bass, so I kinda get why they don't provide a bare spot on the bottom of the bridge. A couple minutes with some 80 grit or a Dremel and it's done.

I'd do as @Gilmourisgod suggests, with out even giving it further thought. Now that you mention it though, why not use a meter and see if the paint is conductive; I hadn't even considered that possibility.
