I've got a line on one of these. I know they are big, heavy old goats, which is OK for me.

I can only find information on other S18's, not the old "C" model. It's very ugly, which I can cure :D

Wondering if it will make a nice subwoofer for bass. No idea what the wattage rating, frequency response or anything like that.

I can probably only listen to it full range.

Might be fun. Might be horrific. I might not survive.

The C stands for carpet, earlier models had black carpet. The S18s, from what I have read worked pretty well as a full range speaker, similar to the S15s but maybe a touch deeper.

I am assuming this cabinet is one of the "cubes" and not the more rectangular shape.

Thanks Wave Rider! I'd say rectangular. Haven't seen it for quite a while, but I was guessing the dimensions based on the 18" driver and it's probably close to 30" tall and 22" wide. It would be OK for my use if it's not very full range, even if it's sub 1KHz. I can cross it over anywhere from 100 to 2KHz.

Rat fur looks pretty nasty. Unless rectangular means run away, if it's still there when I can get to it, I'll take that as a good omen.

Edit: Forgot, it's rear ported and has spring loaded handles. Looking through the BE club, other than rat fur and grill, it looks a lot like top two here: Bag End Club. I think the badge is located different and the grill is perf metal, the stuff with maybe a zillion 1/8" holes in it. One speaker, no horn or anything. Looking at the pic in the link to BE club, I'm thinking about 25 or 26 x 20ish maybe.

I have one and use it mainly to cop the jameson sound in my office, but have run it alone and paired up with one or two Baer M112 at big gigs. Its a little mushy and a little dry sounding, but pretty good. Not one of favorite cabs but I don't ever get rid of it. It has its place and gets some work. This weekend will be used to as a mono sub for the kick drum at a fairground's outdoor stage that has a crappy small PA, so we bring our won and this will be part of it. Hope this helps.

I think it is 600 watts, but we won't push it that hard. Just for some enhancement for the kick so we can try to get people feeling the groove and dance. My questions is how to I cover 1500 people outside without front of the house support. Would 2 Baer's 12/6 do it, or do I need to run out and get an old 4x10 like SWR for $300 to make sure they can hear the bass in the back. No matter what type or how much gear I have there always comes some situation that makes me want to buy more.

C'mon fellas, give a brotha a hand :)

...My questions is how to I cover 1500 people outside without front of the house support...

This, my friend, is why so many bass players run and own the band's PA equipment. Currently I'm running four dual 18" cabs and can easily cross-rent another four when needed. I have no problem being heard at the front, the back or the other side of the fairgrounds!

More like 2x8x10s or 2x4x12s or 2x2x15s... & plenty of Watts...

Here's what it looked like a few months ago when I looked at it. Well, it actually looked a log worse in person. For the price, I can spiff it up.

It looks mostly like that kid in school who couldn't afford new clothes... or shampoo, but with a new, very ugly colored T-shirt. I didn't bother to smell it.

Thanks for the responses, and I didn't want to run the bass through our 12 inch PA speakers so I went without FOH. I ended up picking up an SWR Goliath 4x10 with 4 350 watt Deltas in it to be able to take 1400watts before the gig. Paired with the the Bag End 18 and sounded big but less defined then the Baers. Kind of had a SVT type sound of a harmonic earthquake. Then we went out and got a Yamaha Sub after the gig for those rare occasions when we have big stage and have to bring our own PA. Always find some use for the Bag End 18 and just keeps on going and going.

What does your FOH PA consist of for 1500 people?

We had 2 ev powered 12's and two old Yamaha unpowered 12's both with horns through an old two ton Crown. seemed to well enough but I would guess 200 feet from the stage people could talk without raised voices. We played underneath this tin roof that went out about 100 feet of so and on the recording the whole thing has this big weird reverb. But it ended up raining that day and the crowd was likely half that with people coming and going. Almost every big outdoor gig (for us at least - more then 200 people) this summer had that Colorado rain in the afternoon that interfered with crowd size (or perhaps it is because we suck people don't come out). I don't this a single Yamaha 18 sub will cover this type of gig, but it is a start particular for getting the kick out there more.

So you are saying, you have 2 - 12" full range speakers (unmatched for splaying) (on poles ?) per side with no low end support for a potential 1500 people with a 200' + long throw? and how many degrees wide from the stage?

If that is correct, you are need of PA upgrade... Better to spend money on the bands sound than any one person's... Your audience will benefit greatly from that investment... Pleased audiences usually lead to more attendance
