What's available and affordable? I'd imagine portability is a consideration.

It honestly doesn't matter. Just play the right notes at the right time. There are other genres where your tone matters more.

I have to agree with this 100%. The Blues is not about any particular sound, it is about expression of a feeling. Blues players use whatever they can get their hands on.

Here on Beale street you see every kind of bass imaginable “the P bass with flats” maybe rarely … my go-to is usually a Peavey T45 with Dunlop super brights

When I play blues, I roll the pan on my Ultra Jazz V all the way to the neck, switch off the preamp, and roll the tone to about 50%. Sometime I use my old 95 SR5. I turn down the mids and treble and nudge the bass a tad with the pup selector set in the middle (single coil). Even though it's a StingRay, it works well with this setting.

So Anyway, I vote for an old combo Peavey that costs $50, weighs a ton and is transported in a beat-up Pinto station wagon with a cracked windshield and no heater or AC.

Show everyone you're down on your luck and your blues are legit.

Ampeg B3 combo although it has the 90s weight/watt ratio. Or GR Bass One 350 and Cube 112 cab after you ran your signal thru an Eden Glow Plug.

I’ve had good luck with Markbass. Our local blues jam has been back lined by both the 12” and 2x10” CMD combos, and it sounds great with a variety of basses and styles. Clear with the right amount of warmth. I bought the 12” for myself and haven’t been disappointed.

If you want to spend a little less $, I think Rocketbass or Rumble would be my pick.

That works too. It's the mid range of the p that sits perfectly. I don't ever use flats for anything though. But, it makes it easier.

I saw a guy backing up Davey Knowles with a 5-string BTB, so whatever bass you like through whatever amp you can afford is the ticket.
