Bass Arrangement Differences

I just realized that both massive bass YouTubers (Davie504 and CharlesBerthoud) have made covers of Just the Two of Us (Washington/Withers). The difference in solos is huge. Also, I have never heard a slapped accompaniment to a bass solo except in Davie's arrangement with his wife. Also, can anyone explain the difference in intros?

I guess only he can answer why he chose to do that. Though neither of them have the actual full intro. They're both cut short. The one he plays solo, he simply starts with the bass line of the original and then immediately goes into the melody after one round. The one he does with his wife, she does the bass line and he does something that almost sounds like what the keys do in the original. Though in the original the keys go one round solo before the bass enters at all. It's just keys and drums for a while before the bass sets in.

I assume it's cut short, because it's an instrumental arrangement. Or because people on youtube have short attention span. When people click a video like this (any of the three really), they expect to see some bass action. So no point in doing lengthy intros, especially if they don't involve playing bass.

New to this forum! I have a question about solo bass as in bass only! Do you know of any recordings of solo bass without any other instruments including looping?

Dude! Check out Aaron Gibson, Darren Michaels, Josh Cohen, and Andres Rotmistrovsky (he does bass and vocal duets in addition to some solo stuff). I’ll drop in some links tomorrow after work! I have playlists…

But here:

Edit to ask: As far as “recordings” do you mean like CD releases?

Yes. I mean walk into the studio and record straight. Like a jazz guitarist would.

Arom Bedrosian
Michael Manring

There are others too. Not all of their recordings are pure solo, no looping, but many are. Manring is recognized as one of the greats of bass playing.

D’oh and of course Victor Wooten! Good get @Danksalot

If you two painters in the same room painting the same still life, would you expect the results to be exactly the same?
