Double Bass Bass Bar

Simple question: does the bass bar perform any function besides providing support to the top?

I'm trying to learn everything I can about the double bass, and I couldn't really find a good explanation of the bass bar online...

The bass bar is massively important to the sound of a bass. The positioning, thickness, width, shape, wood choice and if the bar is sprung or not all have a huge effect on the end sound of the bass. A correctly fitted and shaped bar actually helps to create the bass notes as it helps the front swing properly while keeping and supporting the front.
