bass building help.

i am a bassist like all of you. however, I want to do something most bassists don't do: i want to build my own bass. i have no idea how or where to start, but i am determined to make one, no matter how basic. if anyone has any tips, or links to guides or books that might help me that would be cool.

Man, were to start...I'm a bassist like you...and would like to someday build me a jazz or precision bass copy with my personal touches...

You will never stop finding resources...if you look for them. There are TONS of articles, videos, "how to's" and books out there.

I think iT Is best if you get some kind of book...or better...books about bass lutherie.

I would start with something VERY basic...super simple construction. Kind of like a scrapwood build. Pine or something like that. No finish, super simple electronics...maybe try building around an existing neck? But thats just me. I'm no builder myself. Good luck!

A fender style P would be a pretty easy first build. Maybe use a pre made neck for the first one?

If you search around here you'll find tons of threads full of info and step by step pictures of entire builds.

Did you read the stickies? Many of us have put hours into teaching players - like yourself - how we build our instruments.

There is nothing we can do to help you until you begin to help yourself.

^^agreed. This seems to be happening a lot lately. Maybe the stickies need to be bolded and the font enlarged a bit so they can be more readily seen.

Come on fellows, why can't we try to invent a way to read the stickies for the newcomers so that they don't need to do anything themselves. I know it's way too much trouble to read and learn things. It' a lot easier to ask. It would be even better if someone could help and teach bass making via internet so that one only needs to sit on the coach and sip energy drinks. Anybody else interested in this kind of thing besides me?

I find it useless to give any tips when I see that even the basics are not read. Just waste of time.

I thought that was what build threads did.

That's what I thought too but nothing happened to the pile of wood I had in front of me. No matter what I asked they didn't even move a bit. I had to start reading and learning what to do. It took some time and still does.

Today is my second day as a registered user. I bought a fretless Carvin neck maybe 4 years ago and it was under my bed 'waiting for my bass guitar project' but finally I started to build it last year (January 2011) and now is done! I went to a public library and red books like "How to build a bass guitar" watched a lot of YouTube videos of how to router the pickups and electronics cavities, I bought an EMG twin pickup,carvin tuners,bridge,knobs etc.
About the bass body I bought a piece of walnut wood $ 50 dlls (I still have some wood for my second bass guitar!) Today I got my own router! Believe me I enjoy this project a lot ! I tung oiled the bass guitar! once again I watched a lot of YouTube videos of 'how to tung oil wood' etc.! that helps a lot!

More people should take advantage of their local library. Books they do not have they can often get from inter-library loan. How can you beat free?
