Bass Callus's

I have been playing bass for about 4 years and I have developed some good callus's on my right hand index and middle finger. However, over the past couple of days the callus on my index finger has started to peal. I finally got frustrated and pulled of a section. Will my callus come back and is it usual for them to peal with intense playing?
