I'm looking to get a compression pedal and I'm not really sure where to start. Is the Boss CS-3 good for bass and will the Boss Bass Limiter/Enhancer do what a compression pedal does? I'm not particular to Boss pedals, those are just the ones that i have looked at. I just want to know what compression pedals everyone is using and if they like them.

Hey! first post for me but i can tell you what i have come to use today, Electro-Harmonix Black Finger.
For me, it has provided an unbeleivable tone and one which i could'nt get through standard compression on a solid state amp.
They are pricey but they do provide you with great flexibility and a real nice warm tube tone. also you can tweak it to get real gravelly punchy tone from it too.
I play a mix of blues and rock, suits the warm fat tone nicely. then when i want to play some popping funk or harsher punk sound i would tweak it to a really punchy sound.

Thanks for the help. I think I will check into those reviews then go try the pedals that got positive reviews.

  10. bongo's reviews are super-helpful. he makes his opinion clear but he also provides enough info that you can kinda figure out if you would like it more than him.

The Black Finger is awesome, as is the TRex Squeezer. Tube comps in general can really warm up your tone.

I had a Boss CS-3 for a couple years, and I think that there are better compressors out there, the CS-3 filters a lot of lows and it's not well suited for a bass. In order to give you some advice I would need to know which music style you do and which sound do you want to get.

Demeter Compulator and EBS Multi-Comp are some of the most popular but in the $200 range.

Lower range: Aphex Punch Factory, BBE Opto Stomp, MXR Super Comp, etc

I had an EBS MultiComp then went to a BBE Opto Stomp. I've been very pleased with both units.

Yes, check out Bongo's thread. ALL of it. It'll take a while, but its worth it. I go between and Demeter Compulator and an EBS Multi-comp depending on the bass and the kind of music. I think its like pre's, at some point you just gotta try 'em. I guess that applies to basses too, huh:bag:

Don't buy anything until you've tried the Keeley comp.
I have the 2 knob version. Absolutely the most dynamic ,AND more importantly, totally transparent stomp box comp available (IMHO).
It costs a little more than the Boss but it's worth every penny.

  19. Units that get good to great reviews around here:

Demeter Compulator (I own this one)
    Diamond Compressor
    EBS MultiComp

The Diamond is the cheapest of them. I believe Bongo has this pedal on his list of reviews to come in the near future.

Since the Bongo reviews have been referenced already, I'll add these links:

    Demeter HC Reviews
    Diamond HC Reviews
    MultiComp HC Reviews

Keep in mind, the majority of reviewers for the first two pedals are guitarists.
