Bass Compressors

A compressor or compressor/limiter is supposed to provide some evenness to your tone so that you can tame so of the spikes in the dynamics.

Incidentally, compressors are like all other pedals in that some are uber transparent and some add a certain degree of "fatness", "color", and/or "warmth" to your tone. It depends on the manufacturer and that model.

Furthermore, some compressors, under extreme settings will "choke" your sound in that they even out all spikes to the point that it seems like the volume of your signal is decreased. Other compressors will give you a "squashed" or "bouncy" tone from the extreme settings of the compressor. This is especially desireable if you are a slap player.

A good compressor is an absolutely fantastic piece of gear to have. Not everyone likes them or uses them but others do.

One of my personal favorites is the EBS Multicomp. It gives me that slap "squishiness" that I like. Other popular ones are the Markbass Compressore, Diamond Compressor, FEA compressors, and Empress Compressor, among many others.

You will have to experiment and try some of these for yourself. One person might think the world of one particular brand and model but then after trying it for yourself, you might discover that you yourself might not like it as much. At least not for what you need. It's all personal trial-and-error.
