Hi all, just need some advice please. Ill set the scene.....im onstage just set up and the sound engineer hands me the lead from his DI Box. Do i plug it into my line 6 head or plug it into my bass v amp pro. It appears i have 2 preamps/amp with an xlr out. Which one. My vamp is connected to my head at the rear and gives me the option to bypass it and just use me head. Any ideas the best xlr ro use and also is it worth buying my own DI box so that in future i just plug the engineers lead in my self.

Im unfamiliar with the equipment that you mentioned so i cant tell you which one to plug into. however i can address the buying your own DI box issue.

If the sound guys in your area are anything like the ones in mine, buying a box would be a waste of money. The sound guys i have the pleasure of working with always insist on using their box. They always ignore the direct out on my amp. Which is no small feat considering its right next to the quarter inch input jack which im already plugged into and is conveniently located right next to it.

Now with that being said, you might have some really cool sound guys in your area that are willing to work with you on that. Some will mic you AND di you if you ask. it all depends on the sound guy, how big your band is, whether or not you paid him, whether you showed up on time and the other bands didnt eat into your time slot, as well as million other factors.

If you think having your own box would help then by all means, get the box. i would just be sure to get a good one, more importantly a brand that the sound guy would recognize and trust. if he thinks your box is sketchy then he will just want to use his. he KNOWS what his own box can do. he doesnt know what yours might do.

If you want to get your own DI grab a Countryman Type 85, Radial J48, or Radial JDI. All three are industry standard boxes. No sound guy would ever complain if you showed him one of them. The Type 85 is my favorite of the 3. It works very well with both active and passive basses.

If you only run passive basses, and have relatively long cable runs I'd suggest and active box like the Type 85 or J48. The Type 85 runs off of a 9V or phantom, but the J48 only runs from phantom...something to keep in mind. If you only run active basses or have short cable runs any of them would work fine.

With that said, I own a few really nice DI's (REDDI, U5, JDI, and Type 85) and the Type 85 is always in my bag. It always works.

Plug the "out" of yr v-amp into the "in" on the DI, use "link" / "parallel out " on DI to ur amp.
Either that or direct from ur bass into DI then "link" to amp/ v-amp.
