Double Bass Bass Edge Protectors

I've installed and used the type Gollihur has with no problem.

Since I'm slightly disappointed with their aesthetic quality, I asked my luthier about carving some hardwood bumpers. He dismissed the idea and pointed to the leather Gollihur-type he had for sale.

They probably function better than wooden bumpers because the offer some shock absorption with the bass contacts (hits?) the floor. But I doubt they last as long.

I mentioned this vinyl car door-edge molding in another thread:

Available at auto-parts stores; it friction-fits with no adhesive.

A section mate fit it over the top and back edges of all four bouts. His bass (Arvi) has dark varnish, but if black doesn't match your bass, you can also get it in chrome.

Have you heard about the handy-dandy Warburton fan belt DB bumpers? They double as shock absorbers as well, and are practically free except for the amount of $ a bit of hyde glue that you'll need for installation will cost you. :hyper:

I appropriated Paul's great idea, but I used contact cement. They've stayed put since I installed them. See post #4 in this thread for explanation and pix.

Something flexible like leather, rubber or felt, will likely last longer on the bass. Stiff wood would likely pop itself off, the glue weakened by different rates of contraction-expansion between the curved bass sides and the curved bumper, or if it catches and edge.

Wood glued to wood hangs in there pretty well, like the centre seam on your bass or the fingerboard and neck, or the - well, you can probably see where I'm going with this! ;)

I prefer to attach leather bumpers these days for the cushioning ability, but wood isn't a 'problem'.

and of course I thought for my bass... may be in another color (Black)... but it seems to be on the right path here...

I installed Gollihur ones I like then but one bumper keeps sticking out all the time... I may have to go back and installed again with contact cement of something

Edit:
