Hi, my son will be entering his second year in Orchestra and i would like to buy him his own instrument. We had horrible service with the local music store this year, so I will be ordering. Can someone please recommend a 1/4 bass for him, or is there any reason why I should continue renting.

First a few questions:
1) Where do you live?
2) A 1/4-size for a seventh grader? Is he small for his age? (I played a normal 3/4 as a seventh grader.)
3) Does he have a private teacher? If so, what does he/she have to say about the size?

The answers will help us to help you. :)

I hope someone here can recommend a bass shop within driving distance. Is the school orchestra teacher knowledgeable and available to help? If not, then you might do well to find a DB teacher in the area even if you have to pay for his/her time to point you in the right direction. I suggest this because buying a bass without a good foundation of knowledge can go horribly wrong. So, either you have to gain the knowledge, you have to enlist the help of someone who has it, or you must find a luthier you can trust. Most real bass shops are run and staffed by highly trustworthy folks who really do care about long-term relationships with their customers. You may not want to hear this, but a road-trip might be in order. On the other hand, once the size issue is settled, and depending on your budget, it may be reasonable to order one of the trusted brands from a reputable luthier who will deliver the bass with a good setup. The setup is key! I suggest that you study this. Knowledge is power! :)

Oh, and don't teach him your BG fingering techniques! Just kidding with you. :D
