Just a quick question, guys.

Went to my gig last night, opened bass bag, and strings were about five inches from the fingerboard. Then the entire neck separated from the body. Thank goodness nothing is cracked.

Off to lutheir at shop where I bought it tomorrow, but should that not have been at least glued together where the neck and body fit together?

So the neck's separate of the body, just popped out the joint?
No biggy, a luthier will just glue it back in place (possibly with shims) and re set-up the bass. Happens all the time

I just slid the neck back in, will make it easier to transport to the shop. I am suspecting it was never glued in the first place. That was my question: was it supposed to be glued?

But, unfortunately a lot of scratches on bass from it becoming undone in the bag. Going to secure the neck some additional way before I transport, but with the strings off, will be no tension to pop it off again.

Hope the shop can touch them up, should not be a major thing. Bought barely a year ago, and just had it set up again last month. May not cost anything.

Yes, it was glued to begin with. If not, there's no way it would have held together at all under string tension. If you can get the neck all the way off, just take it out and pull the tailpiece wire off of the endpin so you can get the neck/strings completely separate from the body. There will be less chance of damaging more that way, opposed to trying to transport it with the neck resting in the neck pocket. Don't transport it that way!

Good idea, it was easy to separate it. I took the tailpiece off this morning. There is a remnant of a little glue.

Happy to report my bass is repaired! Picked it up at Lemur Music this week. Looking and sounding great! According to Ryan, luthier, they did a neck reset using shims. Also, did a beautiful refinish job due to damage from the neck falling completely off in the bag. This was a totally gratis warranty job. More than happy with the outcome.
