Double Bass Bass newb, judging a bass

Andy Rooney?

"You ever wonder why there are so many cheap basses on ebay that seem to be a great deal? and what's the deal with ebonized fingerboards? I mean are the ebony or not?"

Charlie Brown's teacher?

No, that's what we sound like to the OP.

Someone should be Gary Busey "Not that it's of any consequence, but you may call me Mr. Joshua"

I'm starting an OT thread. This is too good not to see through and I wouldn't want to hijack this beautiful thread any further. See you there.

Kapow!

Two cents worth from newer than new noob : read the stickies, struggled through this whole thread and others, etc. Tonight I went out to take a look at a Paesold ply of dubious origin (came with 2 very nice bows though). I know nothing (or next to) about Doublebasses but because of the 'centuries of collective wisdom' found here, I was able to 1) look smart about it 2) be smart about it and 3) walk away. That being said, if I'd been interested, I already had a pro contact that would have come back out to take a look and chime in about general state of the instrument, set-up, possible issues, etc. Again, took those steps grâce à TB. All is not lost.

ps - my tendons are killing me ... I need a teacher in a big way. Or youtube (Chris Fitzgerald) . Or both.
